Director Statement
In 2009, Zhao Chuang, a young man who had just graduated from Northeast University in China a year earlier, was wandering the streets of Beijing searching for a job. Few knew that this 25-year-old artist, with his long flowing hair and black trench coat, had already gained widespread acclaim in the global paleontology community. Starting from his sophomore year in college, his works began to grace the covers of many prestigious scientific journals, including Nature. This was seen as the starting point for a Chinese science artist to gain international renown. However, outside the small circle of scientists, few understood the significance of Zhao Chuang's work, making his life in Beijing quite challenging.
In September, Zhao Chuang crossed paths with Yang Yang, a writer also seeking job opportunities in Beijing. After nine months of planning, they revealed a seemingly unimaginable project to the world via the internet on June 1, 2010—the PNSO Earth Story Scientific Artistic Creation and Research Program (2010-2070). The project aimed to narrate the inherent relationships among species, natural environments, communities, cultures, and more in the process of life's evolution, based on the latest scientific advancements, using the ancient narrative form of scientific art. It expressed the Earth's past, present, and future from the perspective of human civilization.
Clearly, this 60-year-long work plan did not garner much attention at the time. However, in the subsequent years, Zhao Chuang, Yang Yang, and their founded PNSO institution quickly became a globally renowned scientific art brand.
As a witness to the entire event, I saw how Zhao Chuang and Yang Yang, these two young artists, persevered against all odds to accomplish what seemed impossible. They step by step realized their initial dreams, ultimately changing their destinies.
I intend to create a series of short films depicting Zhao Chuang and Yang Yang's story. This film is the first installment.
