Director Statement
I have made many films about my daily life, attempting to portray my thoughts and feelings as truthfully as possible. It can be said that I do not care about how the audience perceives my personal image and the chaotic nature of my life depicted in the films. However, when deciding to shoot "COVID-19 Era," I experienced unprecedented anxiety and panic. I couldn't even determine if I was engaging in an offense—toward myself or my loved ones. As a documentary director, filming my father's funeral and exposing my family's profound grief to every viewer through the camera required not only courage but also the readiness to face regret—in the coming years or the distant twilight of my life.
I believe I will strive to avoid regrets while I am alive, and even if I do have regrets, I will try not to acknowledge them. As an individual entity, one naturally bears a portion of collective responsibility and duty. This duty includes openly sharing your misfortunes or endless disappointments with the world. The reason this film was eventually shot, edited, and completed is because I believe everyone's experiences are precious components of the era. This includes mine and also my father's.
In memory of the fading hometown and the departing loved ones.
